John S. Gilchrist, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away on July 31, 2026, at the age of 95.

Born on November 27, 1930, to John Swainston Gilchrist and Elizabeth Sneddon Gilchrist, he was the oldest of three children and grew up with a love of learning, athletics, family, faith, and hard work.

John graduated from Kemmerer High School, where he lettered in track, and later attended Brigham Young University before serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Central Atlantic States. After returning to BYU, he met Ruth B. Snow, and they were married in September 1953. While Ruth supported them both, John completed his degree, passed the CPA exam, and built a long career in accounting that included work with major firms, his own practice, and continued service to clients well into his 70s.

John and Ruth raised six children together. Known for his quiet confidence, humor, and determination, John loved teasing friends and family and often used everyday experiences to teach character, resilience, and perspective. He especially enjoyed family trips, making pancakes for his grandchildren on Sunday mornings, watching BYU football, and staying active in sports and other activities well into his later years.

John's faith was central to his life. He served faithfully in many church callings and especially treasured serving alongside Ruth in the young adult ward. He was also well known for his jokes, stories, sharp memory, and love of genealogy, spending countless hours researching his ancestors and sharing family history with those around him.

John is survived by his children, John Scott (Debbie, deceased), Randall Kyle (Rob), Janet Ruth (Mark, deceased), David Lloyd (William, deceased; Michael), and Kathleen (Todd); 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ruth B. Gilchrist; his daughter, Ann Lynne (Barry); and his parents.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Abbington Assisted Living for their compassionate care. Special thanks to Danika, his CNA and companion, for her kindness and dedication. We are also deeply grateful to the staff at Inspiration Home Health and Hospice, including Paige and Sydney, for the gentle support, comfort, and dignity they provided during his final days. Your care will always be remembered with heartfelt appreciation.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 6, 2026 at 12:00 in the Historic City View Mortuary, 1001 E 11th Avenue Salt Lake City, Utah 84103. A visitation will take place from 11:00-11:45 prior to the services. Interment will be held at Salt Lake City Cemetery. There will be a live stream of the services for those that will attend virtually.
