11 Jan Margareta Luttmer
Margareta Anastastia Smit Luttmer was born April 15, 1942 in Groningen, the Netherlands to Margareta Steenbergen and Pieter Smit. She passed away on January 6, 2022, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Margaret immigrated to Salt Lake City, Utah, US with her parents and seven of ten siblings in April, 1953. She attended the Cathedral School, (Cathedral of the Madeleine), St. Mary of the Wasatch and Judge Memorial Catholic High School, graduating in 1960.
That was an exciting year for Margaret, as she married Geert (Grant) Luttmer at the cathedral on June 25th. Margaret and Grant together had six children, raising them in Summit Park and Salt Lake City. After their children were raised, Margaret and Grant split their time between Heber, Utah and Grant’s Pass, Oregon.
Although Margaret’s primary occupation was raising her children, she had many job experiences that she enjoyed and found fulfilling. Margaret had fond memories of her time working as a teen at the medical offices of the Doctors Gross, where she learned to give shots and helped manage their medical practice. After the children were in high school, Margaret owned and operated a franchise of the Diet Center, meeting weekly with many clients and assisting them in developing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. After the Diet Center, Margaret was able to indulge her lifelong interest in fashion by working at the Chalk Garden in Trolley Square for many years.
Together Margaret and Grant owned and managed the Eating Establishment restaurants in Park City and Jackson Hole, Wyoming and Parley’s Grill, Summit Park, in addition to owning a farm in Wendel, Idaho.
Margaret and Grant shared a passion for travel: visiting Australia, China, Russia, Canada, throughout Europe and the United States (including Alaska and Hawaii!). They returned to their homeland, the Netherlands, several times over the years – the last time with most of their children and grandchildren. She loved spending time on her property in Escalante, Utah and was particularly looking forward to the completion of the cabin, “The Shack”.
Margaret duly served in several capacities as a volunteer during her children’s upbringing: float building, booster and coaching support, fundraising activities, etc. at Cosgriff and Judge Memorial Catholic Schools. Later, Margaret volunteered at the St. Lawrence Thrift Store in Heber, Utah.
Although not really a hobbyist, Margaret had a keen talent in sewing and knitting – making clothing and many costumes for her children, and professional grade home decor. Even with all of her skill and talent in these areas, Margaret had two areas of expertise that really shined – her ability to make wonderful meals on a daily basis, and her incredible fashion and style sense.
Margaret will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She is survived by her husband, Grant; son, Grant (Heather) and their children, Nathaniel and Amelia; daughter, Camille and her children from a former marriage, John and Harrison Fauth; daughter, Collette (Steven Rotter) and their son, Isaac; daughter, Kristie (Dean Shilaos) and their children, Yanni and Vassili; daughter, Karena. Her surviving sisters are Wilhelmina C. (Miny) Kosloski and Lamberta (Betsy) Motzkus. She is preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Monica (d. 1961); Wilhelmina M. (Willie) Scholte, Wessel, Pieter, Gerardus (Gary), Everdina (Diny) Kolkena, Jacobus (Jake), Josef (Joe) and Franciscus (Francis). She is also survived by many wonderful nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank its primary caretaker, Elizabeth Aguilar, for providing excellent care to Margaret during her illness. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen, https://ccsutah.org/donate or Best Friends Animal Society at bestfriends.org . Margaret’s children would also like to thank our sister, Karena, for her tireless efforts, advocation and day-in and day-out care and companionship that she has provided our parents through these last several years. A celebration of Margaret’s life will be held at a later date.

You were amazing at this life!!! It’s such a blessing to me that your family shared this obituary of your busy, accomplished, amazing life. I remember our surprise when you so graciously greeted me at that shop of yours in Trolley Square so many years ago. I also remember being at your beautiful home when you hosted our 10th ~Class of ’60~ Reunion. I can’t imagine how much you are missed by your family and friends and now we’ll be missing you at our 60th Judge Reunion this year-2022.
I’m certain that your grace is carrying you through in this next part of your life. It made me happy to know that you also were dedicated to the ministry of St. Vincent de Paul- me too!
Love you! Help us from beyond if you can~ JoAnn Troske Larson – 2022
