John finished his Primary and secondary schooling and went on to serve a building mission for the LDS church.  He helped build a chapel in Merthyr Tydfil, south Wales from 1961 to 1963. He emigrated to the United States in 1973, residing in Idaho, Florida and Utah.

He Married Margarita Cardenas and moved to Miami, Florida in 1979, where their daughter Audrey Jane was born. They were later divorced.

John loved playing board games. He was the king of trivia. He liked watching Jeopardy, Utah Jazz, English football and going to movies. He loved admiring flowers on his walks.
