Owen Mark Mitchell

Owen Mark Mitchell

12/15/1932 – 04/18/2021

Owen Mark Mitchell passed peacefully into the arms of the Lord Sunday night surrounded by his family at the University Hospital. Born in  December of 1932, the youngest child of Sylvia and Harry Mitchell.

At age 24 he met his wife of almost 64 years at her young age of 17. Knowing each other for only 2 weeks, he could not bear to leave Texas without his beautiful Syble, who stayed by his side for the rest of his life. His love for his family was matched only by the size of his heart, his love of Jesus, and of course, his love for flying.

Owen enlisted in the Air Guard at age 17 and immediately shipped out to Korea during the Korean war, serving as ground crew for the F-51 Mustang. He continued with the Guard after the war, receiving his commission through the Cadet Program in 1957, flying the F-86 Sabre.

Owen loved baseball, playing semi-pro in Salt Lake in the 1950’s.  He served as a police officer in Sparks, NV and Ontario, CA.  After many applications for active duty service, he continued his Air Force career, flying C-124 (Old Shakey) all over the world.  He served his tour in Vietnam in 1969, flying the C-7 Caribou to remote outposts.  He completed his flying career in 1973 flying C-141’s.  He flew a desk until his retirement in 1978, then worked at Hill Field until 1993, refurbishing aircraft.

Survived by his wife Syble, son Doug (Lynette), daughter Kerri Putnam (Val), Kristy Blood, son Darren (Sonia), daughter Kayna, 12 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.  Preceded in death by his parents; brother Roy; sisters Lil, Ella, Fern, and Joy.

He meant so much to so many. The heartbreak of losing such a wonderful man is immeasurable, but having known him is so worth the ache of a broken heart. We will never forget his lessons of love that he taught us simply by living his life.  Missed is an underrated word.

Fly high and fast Dad.  We got your six.

Memorial service to be held Wednesday May 5, 2021 at 11:00 at the chapel at Utah Veterans Cemetery: 17111 S 1700W, Bluffdale, UT 84065.

Owen, you left a beautiful legacy in the form of a wonderful, loving family. Thank you for your service to our country and for being such a good husband, father, and friend. Next time I’m in Washington DC with the Honor Flight, I will spend a moment of silence for you at the Air Force Memorial. You have slipped the surly bonds of earth and truly touched the face of God, flyboy. Be at peace. <3
