Obituary

Unicorn RSL (Richard Simon Leafty) passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 3rd , 2026. He was born March 11, 1953 in Murray, Utah to Leland Ray Leafty and Kathleen Mae Cross, one of eight children. Unicorn always stayed close with his siblings often camping together, traveling to Six Flags, and driving around town finding the best deals. Unicorn attended South High School where he ran varsity track. He is survived by his brothers Leland M. (Debra) Leafty, Daniel Leafty, and his sisters Mildred and Cindy Leafty and many nieces and nephews. He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in La Crosse, Wisconsin where he made life-long friendships. He lived with Steve and Kelly Harmsen in Salt Lake City for the last 35 years, becoming a true member of their family where he was honored and loved by their children and grandchildren.

Unicorn devoted his life to bringing people joy, particularly children. Being like a child himself, children gravitated to his authenticity and purity. He spent his time and money giving back to the community. He was everyone’s favorite Santa Clause at Christmas time, substitute teacher, and crossing guard; often showing up to school with prizes and games. He was awarded S.L. District’s Volunteer of the Year in 2004. "He's like the pied piper — they (students) love him and they will do anything for him — I don't care if it is preschool or sixth grade."  (https://www.deseret.com/2004/5/29/19831637/s-l-district-salutes-volunteer/) Said the principal of Parkview Elementary. He loved to watch children learn and grow.

Unicorn served diligently in his callings for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and was most recently warmly embraced by the families from Bonneville Elementary School where he served as a school crossing guard. No job was too small to give an extra detail of attention, often showing up hours prior and dressed for the occasion, he was always prepared and full of spirit.

In 1995 Unicorn made his way to Plymouth, England to look up his ancestors and visit the birthplace of his mother. He made such an impression that they published him in their local newspaper!

Unicorn walked closely with Jesus Christ in this mortal life. He lived a life full of purity and service. We will miss the warmth of his smile, the tender acts of kindness he sprinkled throughout the valley, and the light of Jesus Christ he so effortlessly bore.
