Tomiko Fujiwara Igata, age 84, passed away at her home in Murray, UT on Sunday, August 12, 2018. She was born on February 17, 1934 in Osaka City, Abeno-Ku prefecture, Japan, to Kanae and Chieno Fujiwara. In 1955, she married Ed Wells, a U.S. naval chief petty officer stationed in Japan. They moved to the United States in 1957 and eventually settled in Salt Lake City, Utah. Ed was once stationed at Fort Douglas and really enjoyed the people of Salt Lake and the mountains.
Together they adopted a son, Ronald Edward Wells, when he was 9 months old in 1960. Ed Passed away in 1963 after being married 8 years. She and her son Ron moved to Japan for a year after Ed’s passing and then returned to Salt Lake. Tomiko made many lifelong friends within the Salt Lake Japanese community. She was widowed for 5 years when she was introduced to Toshi Igata at the Salt Lake Buddhist Temple and they married in 1968. She and Toshi, along with many of their friends, really enjoyed taking overnight trips to Wendover, NV, and sometimes won big. Toshi passed away in 2002; they were married for 34 years. She was a cosmetologist for over 50 years and made many lifelong friendships with both her coworkers and her clients.
Her son Ron gave her a grandson and a granddaughter, who gave her 3 wonderful great-grandchildren: 2 boys and 1 girl. She really enjoyed babysitting the great-grandchildren and some of her favorite times out were to take her granddaughter fishing when she was growing up with her husband Toshi. She took her great-grandchildren to the park and watched them play basketball while they were growing up. She will be dearly missed, but we have peace in knowing she is now reunited with dear friends and loved ones who preceded her in death.
She is survived by her son Ron; granddaughter Bambi (Thomas), grandson Damien; and great grandchildren Gemyni, Oryon, and Maiya. Following a visitation at 2:00 p.m., a funeral service will be held at 3:00, Thursday, August 16, 2018 at the Salt Lake Buddhist Temple, 211 W 100 S, Salt Lake City, UT.
