29 Nov Jianzhao (Jenny) He
Jianzhao (Jenny) He, our beloved mother, grandmother, wife, sister, and aunt passed away on November 28, 2022 at 67 years old after a long battle with diabetes and other health complications. She was a force of nature in caring for her family and building a successful family real estate business. She triumphed over daunting challenges with courage, hard work and a positive outlook on life. She will be remembered for her unwavering dedication to family, strong work ethic, and fierce determination.
Jianzhao was born in a village in Hunan, China to Kentang He and Ruiming Li. Growing up, she persevered through famine and substantial upheaval during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. She studied accounting and law, eventually becoming one of a few female judges in Hunan province. She married Yijiang (John) Hu in 1978 with whom she had her only child, Amy. Jianzhao cherished being Amy’s mother and made great sacrifices to better her daughter’s life. During Amy’s youth, Jianzhao spent many years apart from her beloved daughter so Amy could live with her father in America and grow up with freedom and opportunities.
Jianzhao reunited with her family in 1996. In America, she continued to demonstrate her strong work ethic and family devotion by working multiple jobs at the same time to support her family. She brought her boundless energy to every job she held, including janitor, grocery bagger, call center employee, and table busser. Jianzhao eventually secured employment at the University of Utah, where she worked for 24 years as a laboratory technician while simultaneously building a successful family real estate business. During her long tenure at the U, her colleagues estimate that she poured 1.25 million laboratory plates, directly contributing to research that benefit people with neurodegenerative disease. She loved living in America and deeply appreciated all the opportunities afforded her and her family. One of her proudest moments was becoming a US citizen.
Jianzhao has inspired her daughter, her grandchildren and many others with her resilience, humility, generosity, and positive outlook. Later in life, she relished time with her grandchildren, who brought her immense joy and happiness. She is survived by her brother Shutao He; her sister Fatao He; her husband Yijiang Hu; her daughter Amy Hu Sunderland; her son-in-law Seth Sunderland; her grandchildren Tommy, Abby, Halle, Sophie; and several adoring nieces and nephews. Jianzhao was preceded in death by her mother and father. She will be with us always.
Viewing and funeral services will be held on Saturday Dec. 3 with the viewing beginning at 11am and funeral services beginning at 12pm at City View Mortuary (1001 E. 11th Ave., SLC, UT 84103)
